Your Gut Is Your Immune System’s Headquarters

Trainer Tip: Gut Health & Your Immune System

Everyone gets sick between Halloween and New Year’s, and most people blame flu season. But it isn’t the calendar. It’s what we do differently this time of year: more time indoors, less sunlight, more sugar, more stress, and less sleep. All of it hits your immune system at once, and the gut is where it starts.

Why the Gut Matters

Roughly 70% of your immune tissue lives in your gut, and a diverse microbiome helps train and regulate your immune response. Sugar, ultra-processed food, seed oils, overused antibiotics, chronic stress, and poor sleep can all throw it off balance.

What to Do

Food first:

  • Eat fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, and plain whole-fat yogurt.
  • Aim for a wide variety of plants, not just more fiber.
  • Build meals on whole foods: quality protein, vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats.
  • Protect your sleep, get outside for sunlight, and manage stress.

Then support with supplements: Winter foundations include vitamin D3 with K2, vitamin C, zinc, and a good multivitamin. Choose clean, professional-grade brands with minimal fillers and third-party testing. Supplements bridge the gap in today’s nutrient-short foods, but they don’t replace whole food, sleep, or sun.

Check with your doctor before starting a new supplement, especially if you take medications.

This Week’s Challenge

Pick one fermented food and one new vegetable, and make sure your supplements are worth taking. Stop by the trainer desk on the 3rd floor to talk it through.
